Boys Girls Clubs’ auction breaks fundraiser’s record

For its popular annual auction, leaders with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula announced that they far-exceeded their event goal with a record-breaking $602,026 raised.

“We are incredibly grateful to our generous donors, community partners, and volunteers who made this night possible,” said CEO Mary Budke for the clubs.

Organizers used the theme “I’ll Be There For You,” with inspiration from the show “Friends” on Nov. 9 in the Carroll C. Kendall Club in Sequim.

Janet Gray, chief development officer, said they are always looking for a theme to tie to the clubs’ mission in Sequim and Port Angeles, and the show’s theme song “I’ll Be There For You” by The Rembrandts tied into well.

“We know that the club is there for youth and families, and staff are there for kids, and they are there for each other too,” Gray said.

The Sequim club was decorated to channel the show’s New York apartments, and Central Perk coffee shop with an iconic orange couch featured at the event’s Selfie Station.

The auction’s crowd of 400 attendees came together to support the local clubs with various levels of support at the live and silent auctions, and raffles.

The “Bids for Kids” paddle raise portion brought in a record $393,514, including a $100,000 matching gift from board member George Brown.

A “Dessert Dash” featuring 40 desserts donated by community bakers and local businesses raised $23,444, with the top dessert sold for $3,000, organizers said.

Record tallies continued through the night with the event’s “Head Table” selling for a record-breaking $9,000.

Combined, the Sequim and Port Angeles Boys & Girls Clubs host about 400 children per day, and donated funds from the auction will directly support the clubs’ critical programs and initiatives, ensuring that local youth continue to have access to safe, fun spaces that help them thrive.

Organizers said the clubs’ staff provide mentorship, nutritious meals, and an array of life-enhancing programs that focus on academic success, healthy lifestyles, career exploration, and more.

Gray said fundraisers typically generate about 20% of the clubs’ income. This year’s auction had a goal of $425,000, with bids and donations coming in more than $177,000 expected.

“The outpouring of support reflects the deep commitment our community has to ensuring a brighter future for our youth,” Budke said. “This is just the beginning of what we can achieve together, and we’re excited to continue making a difference in the lives of local kids.”
