Verna K. Harms, Ph.D., ARNP, has joined the staff at Primary Care Sequim & Walk-In Clinic. Harms was an associate professor of nursing at Seattle University for six years. She is taking appointments, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday-Friday.

Denise Endres, certified medical assistant, also has joined the staff. She grew up in Sequim and obtained her certification in Alaska.

First Step Family Support Center, a United Way agency, recently was awarded $163,000 from the Washington State Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse for its new Parent-Child Assistance Program.

PCAP, originally developed at the University of Washington, is a home visitation program that will serve 30 extremely high-risk pregnant or postpartum Clallam County women who abuse alcohol and/or drugs during pregnancy. First Step’s intensive case management service efforts will seek to reduce alcohol and drug use and reduce other risk behaviors and address the health and social well-being of mothers and their children. The goals of PCAP are 1) to help mothers obtain treatment, maintain recovery and resolve the myriad problems associated with substance abuse, 2) ensure that children are in a safe environment and receiving appropriate health care, 3) effectively link families with community resources and 4) demonstrate successful strategies to reduce future drug- and alcohol-affected children.

Mindi Blanchard, M.Ed., CPG, will speak at a workshop titled "Identifying Cognitive Decline" to be held at Bridge Builders, Ltd., 305 S. Sequim Ave., Suite A, Sequim, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14. Learn how to identify early signs of cognitive decline, what can be done to compensate and when to ask for help. The workshop is limited to 12 attendees to allow for individual questions. This qualifies as continuing education for caregivers. There is a $10 charge for a continuing education certificate.
