WSU Clallam County Extension is offering a two-day rain garden workshop on Nov. 18-19 in Port Angeles.
This workshop is open to landscape designers, installers, maintenance technicians and community members that would like to learn more about rain gardens and other low-impact development practices.
The workshop will be taught by Erica Guttman, a WSU educator with extensive experience in rain garden design, installation and maintenance and author of several related publications and videos.
The first day of training will be held in the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center, 905 W. Ninth St., Port Angeles and will focus on rain garden site selection, design, soils/compost, plant design/selection, costs, maintenance and new regulations.
The second day of the workshop will involve installing a rain garden at a home in Port Angeles. This will give participants an opportunity to apply the knowledge gained from the first day’s presentations.
On the Olympic Peninsula, demand for properly installed rain gardens is growing, creating a new niche and business opportunity for those with adequate training. State and local regulations are, or soon will be, requiring low-impact development on new construction.
The City of Port Angeles offers a $750 rebate to homeowners for installing a rain garden that meets city specifications.
The workshop fee is $30 and includes snacks and refreshments, a free copy of the rain garden handbook and other take-away materials.
To register, call the Clallam County Extension Office at 565-2679 or e-mail the Master Gardener program coordinator at lhamilton@co.clallam.wa.us.
