Prep basketball: Boys remain undefeated over winter break

Sequim’s basketball varsity basketball squads hit the court over winter break with the boys taking all three of their games at home in convincing fashion while the girls went 1-2.

Boys

Sequim boys remained perfect, nearly doubling up Fife in a 75-40 win Jan. 3.

The victory pushed the Wolves’ record to 9-0 ahead of a huge matchup Tuesday, after press deadline, against rival Port Angeles (1-3 in the Olympic League, 4-5 overall).

The Wolves went up 68-24 early in the fourth quarter, cruising over the final six minutes with the reserves getting a chance to play. And that was against a team that beat North Mason, which is 2-2 in the Olympic League.

Sequim had a lot of balance with six players with at least six points. The Wolves were led by Jericho Julmist, who hit three 3-pointers and scored 20. Charlie Grider had his biggest game of the year with 17 points and Ethan Melnick hit three 3-pointers to score 13. Solomon Sheppard, Hunter Tennell and Mason Rapelje all scored six.

The Wolves aren’t just undefeated, they are winning with an average margin of victory of 27.6 points. They have had only two games this year in which their opponents lost by fewer than 20 points.

The Sequim boys basketball team doubled up on the Bellarine Storm, a travel team from the Bellarine Peninsula outside of Melbourne, Australia, on Dec. 30.

Sheppard hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 24 points while Rapelje hit three 3-pointers and scored 13, while Julmist scored 13 and Grider 12. The Wolves blew the game wide open with a 23-4 second quarter, then cruised in the second half.

The deep Wolves’ bench contributed, as well, as nine Sequim players scored.

On Dec. 28, the Wolves hosted W.F. West (Chehalis) and used a balanced attack with three players in double figures and 10 players scoring to run away from the Bearcats 59-42.

Rapelje and Julmist led the Wolves with 13 points each, while Sheppard got off to a fast start with 11 points, all in the first quarter.

In that first quarter, Sheppard had a big blocked shot, a 3-pointer and two slam dunks to get the home crowd excited.

Along with traveling to Port Angeles this week, the Wolves are set to host North Kitsap on Jan. 10.

Girls

During break, Sequim’s girls went 1-2 over break including a lopsided win over Foss.

Gracie Chartraw scored 22 points and the Wolves were in complete control all game in a 66-19 win over Foss on Dec. 21.

The Wolves blew the game open with a 25-2 second quarter and they dominated the boards 48-15 and also racked up 22 steals.

Chartraw shot 9-for-11 from 2-point range and added five steals and four assists.

Neveah Owns had eight points, while Hailey Wagner had four points, nine rebounds and four steals. Kiley Winter had six points and four steals, while Taylor Heyting had four points and six rebounds. Bobbi Mixon added seven points.

On the same night as the boys, Sequim hosted the Bellarine girls select team in a tight 54-52 loss on Dec. 30.

Chartraw led the Wolves with three 3-pointers and 23 points to go with six assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

“The girls worked hard tonight but came up short in the end,” said coach Joclin Julmist.

Heyting had her best game of the year with nine points and 15 rebounds, including five offensive rebounds.

To finish their winter break schedule, the Wolves traveled to Port Townsend on Jan. 2 and lost 56-36.

The Rivals went up 21-8 after the first quarter and held Sequim to 24% shooting while shooting 17-for-32 on their 2-point attempts.

Chartraw once again led the Wolves in scoring with 24 points, and she grabbed six rebounds to go with five steals. Winter had five points and four steals for Sequim, while Owens had six rebounds. Valle had five points, five rebounds and four steals.

“We struggled to rebound and play solid defense and couldn’t buy a basket,” Julmist said.

“Tough night shooting from the field and free throws. East Jefferson did a great job passing and shooting and rebounding.”

Sequim (1-2, 2-5) will also play in Port Angeles (1-2, 4-5) on Jan. 7 and at North Kitsap on Jan. 10, before hosting Olympic at 4 p.m. Jan. 11.
