For Jeff Pedersen and the staff at SkyRidge Golf Course, 2013 is already a year to remember.

SkyRidge celebrates its 10th anniversary in June, and when Pedersen and company get together, it’ll most likely be in the new clubhouse and Soren’s cafe, which were completed in mid-December and are fully operational in January.

Looking across the granite tables and earthy woodwork inside the cafe last week, Pedersen says, "It feels pretty homey."

That was the idea, he says, for creating a comfortable atmosphere for SkyRidge users.

SkyRidge is a links-style, nine-hole public golf course at 7015 Old Olympic Highway. Complete with four sets of tees and an extra, 445-yard finishing hole — plus driving range — SkyRidge gives nine-holers a chance to play 18 different-feeling holes. It opened on June 14, 2003.

Since then, Pedersen has been looking to update the clubhouse, previously housed in a trailer on the site. Utilizing a number of local workers, Pedersen and his so-called superintendent Allen Patton helped oversee construction of the cafe and clubhouse that got a final inspection two weeks before the New Year.

"I want to support some of the guys who play here (and) who support me," Pedersen says.

For the winter, the cafe serves breakfast from 7-10 a.m. and lunch from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., with standard lunch fare on the menu including burgers and sandwiches, plus beer and wine. Hours will extend to about 7 p.m. in the summer, Pedersen says, though he’s not planning to add a dinner menu just yet.
