Re-envision, reinvent and remodel — that’s what Anytime Fitness owners Jay and Heidi Bryan have done with their 6-year-old business at 10135 Old Olympic Highway in Sequim — and they’re excited for members and the public to see all the upgrades during the center’s grand reopening from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 23.

On the celebratory agenda are games and prize drawings, a Jacob’s Ladder Climber Challenge, healthy snacks and beverages, facility tours and special membership discounts.

Anchored in the corner of Rock Plaza at the Sequim-Dungeness Avenue roundabout, the center has expanded from 5,000 to 7,000 square feet with the creation of zones “that are identified by their benefits and purpose,” Jay Bryan said.

“The primary reason we’re re-inventing is to make working out at Anytime Fitness as fun and enjoyable as possible, and to continue to offer variety and freshness to the community in order to attract more people to a healthy lifestyle,” said Bryan.

“We’re not fitness freaks or fanatics — we just want people to have balance in their lives and exercise is the tool to do that,” he said. “Everyone knows that exercising can be hard work but it also can be fun. By redesigning the club and adding new equipment and a more inspiring space we are helping our members stay motivated.”

Improvements to the club include an upscale design, a brighter interior, new flooring, a new and expanded free weight area and TRX training wall, a special Core Zone and a special zone for High Intensity Interval Training.

“In addition, we have added a brand new multipurpose room for our Post Cardiac Program, Bootcamps and other classes along with functional training,” Bryan explained.

There also is the Ageless Zone with special resistance equipment designed to be senior-friendly and a balance area that will be installed soon. With age, people lose strength so improving muscle tone in a self-pacing way on push/pull chairs increases stability and decreases the risk of falling.

“The Core Zone strengthens the mid-section and stabilizes the spine where all movement begins,” Bryan said.

“We’re very excited about our new equipment,” said Kenny Hall, fitness director. “We have added half racks for Olympic lifts by Torque Fitness along with more weights, Turbo Trainers by Star Trac Fitness, a Jacobs Ladder climber, more Concept 2 rowers, a ski-trainer by Concept 2 and more spin bikes for our classes.”

Bryan said he is very enthused about the new High Intensity Interval Training zone on the airy mezzanine level.

“If something new is backed by science, we need to be on board and be experts,” he said. “High Intensity Interval Training can take the form of various work to rest ratios. For example, the typical Tabata research protocol used 20 seconds work with 10 seconds rest, and was repeated eight times for a four-minute workout. Another protocol highly publicized by Dr. Joseph Mercola used 30 seconds of work, and 90 seconds of rest repeating eight times for a 16-minute workout … and benefits include the same protective cardiovascular benefits of traditional cardio but with increased post exercise calorie burn, and increased human growth hormone levels, all with significantly less time spent.”

The HIIT Zone’s equipment works the lower, upper and full body, Bryan explained, noting there’s a digital clock on the wall so clients can time themselves.

Even more innovative, the 24-hour fitness center has added a new multipurpose room where members can participate in a wide variety of classes. The room features the area’s only Fitness-on-Request system by Wellbeats that allows members to choose from over 75 different virtual/live classes anytime 24-7 via an electronic kiosk.

Outside the multipurpose room door, Bryan demonstrated the user-friendly screen by tapping his forefinger on icons representing the type of virtual class he wanted and the length of time he had to spend for it. A suspended projector plays the class onto a large screen so the client can workout with the virtual instructor in the multipurpose room.

In addition, Anytime Fitness offers scheduled classes with instructors at various times. Classes include Yoga Fusion, Kinetics, Group Cycling (often called spinning) TKO kickboxing and Bootcamp-style workouts.

“We’re eager to show off the new club to everyone in the community,” Bryan said. “In celebration of our new look, we’ll be offering $50 off of enrollment and the entire summer for free to anyone who joins prior to June 30 plus and extra gift to those who join the day of the event.”
