Jac Osborn has been repairing golf clubs for nearly 50 years.
After selling his contracting company, By Design Group, the 24-year Sequim resident wanted to do something that would fill a need in the community.
While local golf courses each host pro shops full of golf gear and merchandise, his store Jax Golf Shop at 10163 Old Olympic Highway, specializes in repairing and modifying clubs.
He offers shaft extensions and shortenings, regrippings, and adjustments to the angle of a club’s loft and lie.
Osborn’s shop houses a large collection of golf sets which can be tailor modified to fit your frame and your physical needs.
“It just seemed like there was nobody else that was doing this, and I’m not saying that there isn’t anybody that can do this,” Osborn said, “but yet to take that leap of faith … at my age, opening up something like this, you can see it’s kind of comfortable.”
Osborn said he feels his store’s role is not to replace services at local courses but to serve as an overflow for them if they’re unable to do repairs immediately for a customer.
While Jax Golf Shop is officially opening on May 1, Osborn has already done work for all of the local golf courses, and both Sequim and Port Angeles high schools since moving to the area.
Osborn also offers emergency services for his customers clubs, and if for some reason somebody needs a club repaired — even “in the middle of the night,” he says — Osborn is willing and eager to bring his expertise to good use.
A life-long golfer, Osborn spent many years living, working and golfing in San Diego, California.
When asked how he would would distinguish the golf community on the Olympic Peninsula, he gave a positive assessment: “If the course is open up here, you’re gonna have guys playing, I don’t care if it’s snowing, rainy, windy … You dress in layers and you carry hand warmers, your hands get so cold you can’t hold a club.
“I’ve never really met anyone up here who’s been out of line. I’ve never seen anyone throw a golf club.”
On the Jax Golf Shop door is a sign — where an hours sign might go — notifying its readers that the store might be closed because Osborn might be out golfing. The owner does plan on keeping consistent hours after the shops May launch, but he plans on getting a sense for the best hours of operation as the business establishes.
