‘Maintenance is name of game’

Sequim HVAC contractor goes solo in new business venture

Being a heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor is a highly skilled and strictly licensed trade and there’s no room for less than superior work when a homeowner needs a new installation, maintenance or emergency repairs.

Bill Mair of Sequim has spent the past 20 years working in the industry for other HVAC contractors, continually upgrading his expertise. Now he and his wife, Anna, have decided to go out on their own with Bill Mair Heating and Air from their longtime Sequim home.

“I was turning 50 and I felt it was the time to go out on my own. My father has been a self-employed contractor in Port Angeles and he always pushed me to own my own business,” Mair said. “This business made the most sense.”

Just open a month, Mair noted, “Out of the gate it’s been pretty steady. A lot of business has come in by word of mouth from my previous customers.”

Born and raised in Port Angeles and living in Sequim for the past 15 years, Mair said, “I’m proud to be local and proud I could stay here to earn a living.”

Long ago he earned two key accreditations: the North American Technical Excellence certification and licensing as a master electrician for limited energy applications. To reach the level of master electrician, he had to have 4,000 hours of supervised hours just to take the test.

Over the past two decades, Mair said, “I’ve done everything. I work on electrical and gas furnaces, ducted and ductless heat pump systems and propane fireplaces and do installation, maintenance and repair for all of them.”

“He has a knack of being really good with his customers — he makes that close connection,” Anna added.

Naturally gregarious, Mair said, “I think I give a lot of respect to my customers. I treat my older customers like my grandparents because I do care. I’m a people person.”

Mair doesn’t want to leave his clients out in the cold literally or figuratively so during his visits, he makes sure that he spends time educating homeowners about their systems.

“I really try to educate people so they can get the longest use out of their systems and maintenance is the way to do it any time of the year.”

Mair said a system may limp along until a cold emergency hits. A burned out heating element or a heat pump running inefficiently will make it hard to heat your house, no matter how high you turn up the thermostat. Mair offers a 30-point annual maintenance check, now at an introductory special rate, and also offers senior discounts.

“Preventive maintenance is the name of the game and education,” Mair said. “I want to keep  this as a small, customer-oriented company to take care of people. I don’t want anybody without heat. Keep it small and it’s personal. It’s really about relating to people and thinking of them as family.”

Bill Mair Heating and Air will take service calls 24/7 and although his main focus will be Sequim, Mair said he will accept customers from Clallam and Jefferson counties. The company is fully licensed, bonded and insured.
