What’s new at the market is our new assistant manager Katherine Landoni. She is a sophomore at Sequim High School who will be helping keep the market in top order on Saturdays. Be sure to welcome this newest member of the market community.
Diana Kohler of Kohler Jewelry is our newest jeweler. She went to college in Santa Fe, N.M., where she had a friend who taught her native bead weaving. With a love for native arts, she also had an affinity toward silversmithing but it wasn’t until later that she took that up.
“My career has been in mental health, particularly in crisis prevention, so I picked up bead weaving again as a stress reliever.” When Kohler left her work in mental health, she was so excited about jewelry making that she started to develop her passion. She tells me, “I had no background in art so I studied on my own to learn more about color and design.” She says, “I learn as I go and make lots and lots of mistakes.”
Four years ago she began working full time at jewelry. As for the future, “I see myself making pieces as fine art, fine jewelry.” She also likes making things for everyday folks but she has visions of more and more intricate art pieces. “I have a long way to go to get there,” she says. I have to disagree, her work is quite intricate and artful.
When asked what she likes about the market, she replies, “I like getting out and seeing a variety of people and the variety of people looking at the work. It is just fun. People in the market are real friendly, for example last week I really enjoyed my neighbor.”
She tells me this story of a market day when it was raining. She had a puddle form on her tent roof. “My husband climbed on a stool to let out the water and completely drenched himself, so he ran to the thrift store and bought some new clothes.” Next day, new puddle, so she said to him, “I know how to do this and not get wet,” but unfortunately, it came down all over her, too. Then she was off looking for some dry clothes.
Watch out for these two on a rainy day!
She wholeheartedly tells me, “My husband has helped me with every show, he has been the absolute biggest help ever. I am so lucky he will do that for me.” Be sure to visit Kohler Jewelry on Saturday.
Music on tap
The music on May 18 will be Sequim’s finest duet, Howly Slim and Sandy Somers, singing great traditional folk songs and ballads. On May 25, we will have Buck Ellard playing country songs and spicing up the place with his fine fiddle playing. We are fortunate to have such great musicians in our midst. Don’t miss the opportunity to see them for free from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays!
The Puppy Pilots will be available to share information about their project, bringing up seeing eye dogs to help the blind, on May 18 in the Suzanne Arnold Community Booth. On May 25, the New Dungeness Light Station Association will be using the community booth to answer your questions and inform us about their work with the lighthouse.
