The once and future dynasty

After eight years in business Dynasty Chinese, the popular Asian restaurant tucked away in a corner of the QFC parking lot, will close at the end of the business day, Sunday, June 24.

That’s the bad news.

The good news: Soon, very soon, Dynasty will re-open in Sequim.

Kevin and Melissa Guan, the husband-and-wife owners of the popular restaurant, said the lease on the current facility expires June 30. The building’s owner, Don Mai, has said he won’t renew the lease.

Melissa said she’s now negotiating for another space and plans to announce the new location soon.

In the meantime, Melissa said, “I appreciate everyone’s loyalty and support.”

Moving on

Melissa said the lease isn’t being canceled because of a failure to pay, but rather because she failed to note the lease had built-in rental rate increases. She said she wasn’t reminded of those increases until she received the notice that the lease wouldn’t be renewed.

She speculates that Mai, who owns the Soho Asian Bistro in Port Angeles, is planning to open a restaurant in the space.

The Guans purchased the Dynasty business from Mai, who also formerly operated both the Sequim and the Port Angeles Dynasty Chinese restaurants.

The couple asked for additional time to find a new location but Mai declined.

Mai said he doesn’t know yet what he will do with the Sequim location.

Melissa, a Laotian refugee, met Kevin when the two were living in San Francisco. They lived in Seattle for four years before investing in the Sequim restaurant.

She added that she will honor all gift certificates or, if the certificate owner chooses, will issue a refund. E-mail Melissa at sequimdynasty@gmail.com.
