I believe it would be irresponsible for us to vote yes on the upcoming School Bond Election … absolutely insane, in fact.

I must say that I agree with Gazette readers John Sartori and Jerry Sinn … for several reasons:

As several other readers pointed out, the current administrators “ignored” the need for new classroom facilities for a very long time.

And yet, in last year’s “big overhaul” at Sequim High School, money was spent not on classrooms, but to refurbish the auditorium and administrative offices.

The same people who would be in charge of the funds raised by Proposition 1 for $154,325,000 are the people who ignored the upcoming need for additional classroom space and chose to rebuild and refurbish an auditorium and the administrative offices at Sequim High School.

Proposition 1 is too much project and funding at one time for Sequim School District to properly handle. That is the simple truth of the entire issue.

This entire proposal should go back to the drawing board and do the proposed projects in phases … prioritize like each of us has to do with our household budgets … the most important first and so on.

Yes, our students deserve a “good education” … new buildings DO NOT improve education!

Many of us remember getting a really good education in small schools … some with multiple grades in one room! New classrooms are nice to have, but a good education they do not make.

Our city council was right to vote down a resolution supporting this bond issue! They are protecting us from this proposition that tries to “eat the entire elephant in one big bite.”

For these reasons, I will be voting NO on Proposition 1 and I urge all other responsible voters in Sequim to do the same!
