First Friday readings feature two authors

Fourth Friday Readings is set for 6:30 p.m., Friday, April 22, at The Lodge, 660 Evergreen Farm Way, Sequim. The free event features local memoirist Mashaw McGuinnis and short story author Kristy Webster. Writers may sign up for the five-minute open mic readings that follow. Centrum to host Scottish fiddler

Centrum brings master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser with cellist Natalie Haas to Port Townsend at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 17, in the Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden State Park. Tickets are on sale at www.centrum.org or by calling 800-746.1982.

Gem, mineral group hosts open house

The Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association hosts its spring open house from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the club’s shop, 81 Hooker Road, Unit 5, in Carlsborg.

NYC jazz in Sequim

A jazz duo, with New York City pianist Ted Brancato and local bassist Dirk Anderson, will be playing sets of original music and some jazz standards from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Sequim. They will be playing Brancato’s original compositions, several of which have been composed in the past several months inspired by the beauty of living in a cabin on Dabob Bay in Quilcene with his wife, as well as selections from Brancato’s 2013 release, “The Next Step.”

Poetry workshop set

A poetry workshop, led by Joseph Bednarik — co-publisher of Copper Canyon Press, a nonprofit dedicated to poetry — is set for 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 73 Howe Road.

Bednarik studied philosophy at Haverford College and has worked in literary publishing for more than 20 years.

Book reading, signing planned for April 23

Author Judith Aftergut will read from and sign her book “Everything They Wanted: Muz, Joe, Reid Inlet and Glacier Bay” from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Green Haven Apartments commons room at 375 Fasola Road, Sequim. PoetrySLAM slated

The 2016 Clallam County PoetrySLAM for young poets and thespians in the sixth grade will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

Students will compete by reading an original work or reciting a published poem. The library’s annual Poetry-SLAM encourages young adults to express themselves through poetry.

SLAM contestants represent the winners of elimination rounds held in local classrooms and at the library. Prizes include a Samsung Galaxy 4 tablet and gift certificates to local bookstores.

This event is free and open to the public.

Monday Musicale presents Vocal Unlimited

Monday Musicale will meet at noon Monday, April 18, in the Queen of Angels fellowship hall, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles. The noon meeting will be followed by 1 p.m. entertainment, Vocal Unlimited, which is open to the public. For reservations, call Ruth Welch at 457-5223.

Poetry on the paths with ONP, NOLS program

This spring the North Olympic Library System is teaming up with Olympic National Park to offer a third season of Poetry Walks. This year’s program run April 1-May 31 and features poetry along five trails in Olympic National Park.

The goal, program officials say, is to encourage residents and visitors to get out and be active. During Poetry Walks, poems are placed on signs along the following trails in Olympic National Park: the Hall of Mosses Trail, the Living Forest Trail, the Madison Creek Falls Trails, the Peabody Creek Trail and Spruce Railroad Trail. With the exception of the Hall of Mosses trail, access to the trails is free.
