Dance conference set at PT’s Fort Worden

Clallam and Jefferson County residents can get a discount on registration fees for the ninth-annual Somatic Dance Conference, to be held for the first time in the Pacific Northwest, set for July 20-23 at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend.

Bill Evans established the Somatic Dance Conference at the State University of New York College at Brockport in 2013. Since that time (except for the pandemic years) it has been offered in the northeastern United States annually and has attracted 2,000 participants. From July 20 through 23, the Conference will be held at Fort Worden. Jefferson and Clallam County residents may attend for only $100.

Those wishing to attend the opening night keynote dinner will pay an additional $30. Registration deadline for the discounted fee is June 25.

Visit evanssomaticdance.org or billevansdance.org to register.

Northwind Art invites entries to plein air show

Artists who love to go out and paint the sky, sea, forest and light are invited to submit their work to Northwind Art for its plein air exhibition to open in Port Townsend later this summer.

The deadline is July 14 for submissions to this juried show, which will be at Jeanette Best Gallery, 701 Water St.

Titled “Weather or Not,” the exhibition is two things: a celebration of painting outdoors and a tribute to the late Kathy Francis, who co-founded a plein air painting group of the same name. She led the group until her health would no longer permit it; Francis died in January 2020 at age 77.

The “Weather or Not” show is open to entrants from across the Northwest: Washington state, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and British Columbia. The show is strictly for paintings done en plein air, out in the elements. For complete details, see northwindart.org and click on the red “Call to Artists” banner at the top of the home page.

Artists may submit up to five entries. If their work is accepted into the show, it will be eligible for the $500 Juror’s Choice award, one of three $300 merit awards and the $100 People’s Choice prize.

“Weather or Not’s” juror is Catherine Gill, an internationally known artist and teacher. She’s a co-founder of Art Partners International, an organization dedicated to bringing together art and artists of diverse cultures, and author of “Powerful Watercolor Landscapes,” a book for artists of all levels.

The “Weather or Not” exhibition runs Sept. 1-Oct. 29 at Jeanette Best Gallery. The gallery is open from noon-5 p.m. Thursday-Monday, and from noon-8 p.m. for Art Walk on the first Saturday of every month. See northwindart.org.

PA gallery welcomes Woods’ art

Harbor Art Gallery is welcoming guest artist Andrea Woods to display her work throughout the month of July. Located at 114 N. Laurel St., Port Angeles, the gallery features work from local artists in a wide range of media, and is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

Woods is a contemporary oil painter living in the Pacific Northwest, where she finds inspiration for her paintings.

“Art is a visual language. The artist communicates their concept and feeling, their intent, to the viewer through the painting,” Wood said.

Woods credits early educational experiences for her strong foundation in drawing, which forms the basis for all of her artwork. She continues to learn from other artists throughout time.

“We never stop learning: it is a wonderful process and journey,” she said.

Although Woods has worked in many mediums, oil paints are her preferred materials, as she enjoys using rich colors and varying textures “to create places where we would all like to go.”

Harbor Art Gallery showcases work by other local artists, including Bob Stokes and Cindy Elstrom, Carolyn Guske, Robert Amaral, Garret Delabarre, Terri Ench, Tammy Hall, Susan Kantowitz, Ruth Kaspin, Nancy McFaul, Gail McLain, Eric Neurath, Miranda Petruska, Randy and Sallie Radock, Jodi Riverstone, Nathan Shields, Jennifer and Davis Stevenson, Lance and Haley Snider, Eileen Webb and Kevin Willson.
