England comes to Sequim
Award-winning musician Frances England makes her first appearances at the Olympic Peninsula libraries this spring.
There will be two opportunities to catch England’s fun, heartfelt music: a matinee performance at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 13, at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., followed by another performance at 6:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. England, an indie-rocker for the preschool set who resides in San Francisco, has won numerous awards for her five albums.
Second Weekend ArtWalk features landscape artist
Karen’s Frame Center, 625 E. Front St., Port Angeles, features artist Valle Nevaril during the Second Weekend ArtWalk, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 13. Nevaril is a native of Port Angeles who primarily paints local landscapes and gardens in oils and acrylics.
As an active member since 1997 of the Olympic Peninsula Art Association, she recently won the Peoples Choice award in the members’ show for her oil painting, “Stone Bridge in the Snow.”
Washington Old Time Fiddlers at Sequim grange
On Saturday, May 14, the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association meets and performs at Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.
Doors open at 9 a.m., open jamming starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by a business meeting at 11 a.m., then open jamming continues to 1:30 p.m. F
ree group fiddle lessons for members and non-members 13 and under are from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. On-stage performances by WOTFA members are from 1:30-3:30 p.m. The performance is free and open to the public.

Book: Murder, mayhem at 1893 world’s fair
“The Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson will be discussed at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
According to Booklist Reviews, “Larson’s ambitious, engrossing tale of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 focuses primarily on two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect who was the driving force behind the fair, and Henry H. Holmes, a sadistic serial killer working under the cover of the busy fair … A magnificent book.”

Come fiddle around
Learn to play old-time fiddle tunes by ear from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, in the Sequim Library meeting room, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
The session is intended for those 21 and under with one to two years playing a melody instrument, but all are welcome to listen or play back-up with acoustic instruments. Old-time is traditional music often learned by ear rather than from sheet music. Much of it is dance music. The free program is presented by District 15 of the Washington Old-time Fiddlers Association. Donations are welcome.

Learn about small-batch distilling at library event
For all fine food and drink enthusiasts, small-batch home distilling is a must-try experiment. Distillation expert and author Victoria Redhed Miller will venture beyond home-brewed beer and wine during her presentation, “Craft Distilling,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.
In this free event, Miller will introduce audience members to legal facts important for hobby distillers and discuss the principles of distillation. Learn the basics to get started making quality gin, whiskey, vodka, tequila or rum on a small scale.
Singers plan benefit concert
Peninsula Men’s Gospel Singers is presenting its annual benefit concert at 7 p.m. May 21, at Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 925 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim. Each year this group provides a concert to give all donations contributed to a worthy cause.
This year the funds will be split between The Answer for Youth and the Cynthia Dawson Cancer Relief Fund. Cynthia, wife of one of its former singers, Shawn, and also co-owner of Gordy’s Pizza, was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer two years ago. Medical expenses, beyond insurance coverage, is mounting and these men, who sing and pray for her also are asking the public to help.
Concerts to feature local cellist
The final Port Angeles Chamber Orchestra program of the season will feature cellist and Port Angeles native Traci Winters, in Boccherini’s Concerto in B-Flat major. The orchestra also will be bringing the audience string music by Edward Elgar and works by Handel.
Concerts are at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles; and at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at Sequim Worship Center, 640 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.
Tickets are $12 with free admission for youths 16 and under when accompanied by an adult. Get tickets at Port Book and News and the symphony office in Port Angeles; at The Good Book in Sequim; at Sequim Village Glass of Carlsborg; and at the door.
Band concert is Sunday
The Sequim City Bank begins its 25th outdoor season at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at the James Center for the Performing Arts in Carrie Blake Park with about 60 band members.
The music director is Tyler Benedict, a low brass musician, who has held the baton since 2013.
The concert will feature marches and rags.
