Woodturners set meeting

The Strait Turners Woodturning Club will meet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.

The group’s demonstrator for October is professional woodturner Rudy Lopez, presenting live from Florida. He will be turning a deco-rimmed bowl.

Established in 2016, the Strait Turners meet the third Saturday of each month.

Sherwood to host Honky-Tonk Rebel

Mario Carboni, aka The Honky-Tonk Rebel, is the guest musician at Sherwood Assisted Living, 550 W. Hendrickson Road, at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21.

Carboni is a renowned keyboardist who has toured across 35 states and perfumed with stars such as Red Simpson and Norm Hamlet, as well as performances and recordings with Steve Earle, Jimmy Phillips, Susan Raye and others.

He has five studio albums and a career spanning decades.

“We are incredibly excited to host Mario Carboni at Sherwood,” says Janaye Birkland, administrator at Sherwood Assisted Living.

“His impressive musical background and energetic performances are sure to bring joy to our residents and the entire Sequim community.”

The event is free and open to the public. Enjoy complimentary appetizers crafted by Sherwood’s chefs.

Beatlemania in PT

“Here Comes the Sun” and “Yellow Submarine” were among the Beatles hit songs inspiring Art quilts and other textile pieces that currently share space with 1960s concert tickets, posters and other memorabilia in the new Peninsula Textile Artists exhibit in uptown Port Townsend.

Port Angeles Beatles fan and textile artist Merrie Jo Schroeder curated the 24/7 walk-by display in the Fiber Habit window at 675 Tyler St., up now through November.

Artists participating in “Beatlemania: 60th Anniversary” besides Schroeder are: Evette Allerdings, also from Port Angeles, Liisa Fagerlund, Sequim, and from Port Townsend, Sue Gale, Pat Herkal, Kindy Kemp and Debra E. Olson.

“Home, Sweet Home,” curated by Olson, will open in the space in the first week of December and continue through January.

Peninsula Fiber Artists meets monthly at 10 a.m. for informational meetings.”Fun with Stabilizers,” presented by Terri Wolf and Linda Carlson, is the topic for the Nov. 13 meeting at the Gardiner Community Center. There is no charge to attend.

Third open mic event to feature writer/poet

David De Witt will be the featured speaker at Third Friday Open Mic hosted by Olympic Peninsula Authors set for 6 p.m. on Oct. 18, in the KSQM 91.5 FM community room at 609 W. Washington St.

The event is free to the public. Following De Witt’s presentation, the group hosts 5-minute open mic readings for writers of all genres. Audience members may participate or come merely to listen. To participate, come early to drop a name in the hat.

De Witt has been a writer and poet for more than 20 years. A descendent of members of the Colville tribe and of mixed “forest-loving” European ancestry, he often reflects on the natural world in his works.

Mixing poetry and prose, his spoken word style of expression is creative, fun and inspiring, event organizers say.
