Camp Heebie Jeebies, the camp all about jazz, returns for its 20th year from July 19-25 at Camp David Jr. on Lake Crescent.

Director Karla West said they have space for 70 students ages 12 and up with adults welcome to participate.

“We have an all-star instructor lineup and it’s pretty amazing,” West said. “We’ll concentrate on early jazz and big band and vocal jazz.”

This year, West said camp organizers hope to recruit 30-35 players from the Sequim and Port Angeles area.

However, with the $595 camp fee, West said they have partial and full scholarships available for participants.

“No one is going to be turned away because they can’t afford it,” West said. “We always ask if they can contribute anything.”

Students come from all over the West Coast and the camp originated at western Montana’s Seeley Lake before moving to Clallam County.

Camp logistics coordinator Bud Critchfield said students may come into the camp not knowing anyone but the camp has resulted in a lot of lifetime friendships.

Camp faculty and organizers encourage the public to come to the camp to hear the children perform each night around 7 p.m.
