The Sequim City Band continues to celebrate Sequim’s Centennial at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, in the James Center for the Performing Arts.

This month, the centennial theme is the 1980s. Under the direction of Tyler Benedict, the band will give the audience a taste of pop, symphonic concert band music, musical theater and movie music, as well as the standard rousing march.

The program includes “Flashing Winds” by Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost. “Seagate Overture” by James Swearingen was written in 1988.

John Philip Sousa’s “Gladiator March” was written in the ’80’s also, albeit 1886. “Soaring With John Williams” showcases the great movie composer’s popular themes from “Superman,” “The Empire of the Sun” and “Star Wars.”

“Michael Jackson Through the Years” pays tribute to the King of Pop who dominated the charts in the 1980s. Included in the medley are “I Want You Back,” “I’ll Be There,” “Rock With You,” “Thriller” and “Man in the Mirror.”

The 1986 musical “The Phantom of the Opera” by Andrew Lloyd Webber is well known and loved by all audiences regardless of their decade of birth. A medley including “Think of Me,” “Angel of Music,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “All I Ask of You,” “Point of No Return” and “The Music of the Night” will be performed. Concluding the concert is a march by Russel Alexander, “Colossus of Columbia.”

The Sequim City Band is made up of more than 60 volunteers from Clallam and Jefferson counties.
