Hansel and Gretel auditions

The Missoula Children’s Theatre will hold auditions for its production of “Hansel and Gretel” from 4-6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20 in the auditorium at Sequim High School. Try-outs are open to students ages 5-18.

Those auditioning should arrive at 4 p.m. and be prepared to stay the entire time.

Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the auditions.

Among the roles to be cast are Hansel and Gretel; their granny; the Wildwood Witch and her loyal cooks; modern-day campers lost in the woods; lots of rascals and denizens of the deep; and a flock of cuddly wallybirds.

No advance preparation is necessary. Assistant directors will also be cast to aid in rehearsals throughout the week from 4-8 p.m. each day.

“Hansel and Gretel” will be presented on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the SHS auditorium.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre residency in Sequim is presented locally by Kalo Vass on IDEAL Real Estate’s Brody Broker Team with support from Horizon Title and Precision Hardwood Floors.

Free demos at Blue Whole Gallery

Artists Marilyn Hiestand and Anne Grasteit will offer a free hands-on demonstration of eco printing and collage from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 at Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St.

The women will demonstrate how to use various items found in our environment in the art of printmaking.

Both Hiestand and Grasteit are accomplished artists in several art mediums. Hiestand is well known for her eco printing on silk and Grasteit is known for her use of eco prints in collage. Both enjoy the abiity to use what is “found around the yard” in creating their art.

Those attending the event will have the opportunity to create an eco print for themselves, using Hiestand’s and Grasteit’s techniques.

Tryouts for The Man in the Green Truck

The Port Angeles Community Players (PACP) will hold auditions for the readers theatre production of “The Man in the Green Truck” by Sequim resident John Bertholl at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.

Tryouts will take place on the Playhouse main stage at 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Performance dates will be on the third weekend in March.

“The Man in the Green Truck,” based on Bertholl’s own experiences, focuses on the challenges of becoming the decision-maker for aging and ailing parents. Funny incidents in the play mitigate the pain of losing loved ones.

Director Barbara Jo Maier will lead the cast of eight. At least two men and two women will be required, with other roles open to any gender. No memorization is required, as the play will be read from scripts on stage. The rehearsal schedule, starting in March, will be minimal.

Penny’s Cabaret at Studio Bob

The first Penny’s Cabaret at Studio Bob, 118 1/2 E. Front St. in Port Angeles, will take place Saturday (Jan. 18) at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Hosted by Penny Featherbottom and featuring performances by burlesque performer Pistil Peach, Draglesque performer Mike Drop, poet laureate Jaiden Dokken, acrobats Mia Underwood and Logan Laxon, singer-songrwriters CV Wells and Shannon Cosgrove and Sequim drummer Peter Beeler, the show highlights some of the best local talents on the Peninsula. Out-of-towner Nicole Spiegel, a hula-hooping rollerskater, will also be part of the show.

Admission is $25. VIP tickets are $40. Tickets can be purchased in advance at outloudstoryslam.com. Tickets at the door will be $5 more. Cash and cards are accepted.

PT Community Dance

The Port Townsend Community Dance will take place from 7:30-10 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 18) at Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m.

Longtime Seattle caller Alex MacCleod will be on the mic, offering a rich selection of squares, contras and related dance forms. Rocking dance tunes will be served live by Breaking Up Christmas, with Dave Thielk on fiddle, Chris Cooper on banjo, Carol Hardy on guitar and Chris Stuart on base.

The Port Townsend Community Dance is inspired by traditional kitchen and barn dances and features a mixture of traditional sets, always danced to live music along with a dance caller. All experience levels are welcome, and all dances are taught. Come alone, with a partner or your family.

Admission is $10 per person; $20 per family. Please bring your own personal water bottle.
