Digging for Dinner in Quilcene on May 13

The Jefferson Marine Resources Committee is sponsoring its annual Digging for Dinner event from 10:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at the WDFW Quilcene Bay Tidelands on Linger Longer Road. Fish and Wildlife Department biologists Camille Speck and Doug Rogers will share their secrets for successful clam harvesting.

This event is a wonderful way for the whole family to learn more about clams, where to find them, how to harvest safely, rules and regulations, and recipes for using your harvest. An advanced RSVP is required. Go to http://jeffersonmrc.org for registration information and more details about this event. Or contact Cheryl Lowe at 360-379-5610 ext. 230 or cheryl.lowe@wsu.edu.

Once you register, parking directions and more information will be sent. Participants will need a WDFW shellfish license. Children 14 and under do not need a license.

Beth Ely, who attended this event with her family in 2016, said, ”Our extended family had a blast at Digging for Dinner last year. The shellfish safety instruction is a must and the hands-on practice was very helpful.”

Cheryl Lowe, Jefferson MRC coordinator, explains, “Digging clams is easy and fun, once you know how to do it. It’s important to know how to do it safely and sustainably, and to understand how important clean water is to safe shellfish harvesting.”

This public event is free. A $10 suggested donation per family helps support future marine education programs. Support for this program is provided by the EPA through the Puget Sound Partnership and the Northwest Straits Commission.

Register early as space is limited. For more information, go to http://jeffersonmrc.org.
