Dungeness Valley Lutheran to honor retiring pastor Sunday

Members of Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 925 N. Sequim Ave., look to honor their retiring pastor the Rev. Jack Anderson at his last service in Sequim at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, May 28.

The public is encouraged to stop in and offer their best wishes to Anderson and his wife, Karin, a well-known artist at Blue Whole Gallery.

Anderson was called to the church more than 14 years ago and the couple plans to move to Santa Fe, N.M. soon.

Church members say Anderson emphasized the motto engraved in large letters on the front of the altar to “Reach Out — Share God’s Love.”

In response, the congregation has overwhelmingly supported local charities.

From 2005-2016, church members report 36 nonprofits/service agencies in Sequim and Port Angeles have received over $300,000 in donations from the church.

Some of the beneficiaries include Lutheran Social Services Northwest, Dungeness Valley Health &Wellness Clinic, which was started in the church parish house, Sequim Food Bank, Sequim Community Aid and Serenity House of Clallam County.

Monthly the church donates about 300 pounds of food and supplies to the Sequim Food Bank and several volunteers participate in the annual Fun Walk for the free clinic, raising thousands of dollars. The congregation also volunteers at the clinic, for Habitat for Humanity, the Sequim Food Bank and elsewhere.

Church members also say Anderson emphasized the importance of welcoming everyone into the fellowship and serving those most in need.

They report Dungeness Valley Lutheran’s facilities are used for more than 20 meetings each week for a variety of activities such as self-help organizations, exercise groups and Mosaic, a program for people with disabilities.

Following Anderson’s retirement, the Rev. Beth Orling serves as interim pastor throughout the process of calling a new permanent pastor starting June 18.
