Irish ensemble comes to Field Hall for Oct. 6 performance

Field Arts & Events Hall hosts Ko Tonga Cheol at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, in one of only two U.S. performances by the diverse Irish ensemble this year.

The group’s only other U.S. appearance will be at Meany Hall in Seattle.

This cultural exchange is made possible through the support of Culture Ireland, which has been promoting the global impact of Irish artists since its establishment in 2005.

Ko Tonga Cheol, meaning “Weaving Music in the New Ireland,” is led by Congolese guitarist and singer Niwel Tsumbu, a celebrated figure in Ireland’s music scene. The ensemble exemplifies the evolution of Irish music, influenced by the positive cultural impact of migration. Tsumbu and his band mates — Eamonn Cagney (percussion), Liz Knowles (violin), Niall Vallely (concertina), and Jason Sypher (double bass) — come together to define a new Irish sound, shaped by the diverse nationalities now calling Ireland home.

Ko Tonga Cheol is a celebration of how the universal language of music fosters a new collective consciousness in Ireland. Through their dynamic fusion of African rhythms, Irish folk and global sounds, the group showcases how cultural exchange transforms tradition into what performance hosts describe as “something vibrant and modern.”

The doors to Field Hall, 201 W. Front St., Port Angeles, open at 1 p.m., with refreshments available for purchase at the downstairs Beth & Cappy Rothman Lobby Bar at Field Hall. Tickets are available at fieldhallevents.org/tickets.
