Writers on the Spit features Teya Priest Johnston and Craig Andrews at the Oct. 24 Fourth Friday Readings in Sequim.
The public is invited to arrive at Rainshadow Coffee Bar, 157 W. Cedar St. in Sequim at 6 p.m.; the readings begin at 6:30 p.m.
Johnston, a poet and short story writer, said she is inspired by nature and the view from her home high on Blue Mountain. She has lived the majority of her life on the Olympic Peninsula but was born in North Carolina, and much of her writing often reflects a southern flavor.
Johnston studied writing at Peninsula College and was published in several chapbook anthologies. In addition, she won an award from the literary magazine, Passager.
Andrews does most of his writing at four in the morning. He said he is a deep believer in the transformative power of the written and spoken word.
“Yoga, poetry and meditation are spiritually united,” Andrews says, reflecting on the influence of yoga and meditation on his writing.
He is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz with a degree in religious studies. Most recently, Andrews published three collections of poetry – “Acts of Creation,” “A Song in Amber” and “Some Things Gentle/Some Things Kind” (Autumn Sun Publishing).
The Fourth Friday Reading Series invites writers of prose and poetry to sign up for the five-minute, open-mike readings that follow Johnston and Andrews. Writers names are drawn from those submitted before the event begins.
Come early for a good seat and excellent coffee. Readings begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.
