The Juan de Fuca Foundation and Ballet Workshop Productions, both of Port Angeles, present a local twist on “The Nutcracker.” Shows are at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, 304. E. Park Ave.
This historic new staging of “The Nutcracker” brings together more than 80 local ballet students, theater performers and guest dance artists from Seattle’s Pacific Northwest Ballet.
Set in the Great Depression of Clallam County in 1895, this original story follows the adventure of young Marie and her brother, Frank, who are given a magical gift of a nutcracker by their wealthy godfather, business tycoon Gregers M. Lauridsen, at their family’s Christmas Eve barn dance.
In the story, at the family estate in the foothills of Hurricane Ridge, Marie, Frank and farm boy James are preparing for the arrival of their guests. Musicians, entertainers and family friends begin to arrive from all over town, bringing seasonal house-warming gifts.
The festivities end as midnight snow begins to fall and Marie and Frank are taken on a journey with the Nutcracker Prince, dreaming of a fairy-tale land where sugar plums dance and lavender sparkles in every field.
Set to Tchaikovsky’s traditional “Nutcracker” score, this home-grown production will capture your heart as it pays tribute to the rich history of life on the Olympic Peninsula at the turn of the 20th century.
Tickets are $15-$35 for adults and $10 for youth 14 and under.
Ticket outlets are at jffa.org, Port Book and News in Port Angeles and Joyful Noise Music in Sequim.
