Local RSVP volunteers honored for service

RSVP of Clallam and Jefferson counties recently honored its volunteers for their efforts

Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Clallam and Jefferson counties, a state — and federally — funded program, recently honored its volunteers for their efforts.

Olympic Community Action Programs sponsors both the RSVP program and volunteers with North Olympic Volunteer Corps (NOVC).

The organizations bestowed gold, silver and bronze awards for more than 150 local volunteers who worked at least 100 volunteer hours between April 1, 2019-March 31, 2020. Those volunteers worked 85,691 total hours last year. In all, more than 400 OlyCAP volunteers served communities on the Olympic Peninsula in that time frame.

Among the activities performed, volunteers worked with partner agencies to provide emergency food distribution, youth tutoring, delivering

meals and transporting senior adults to medical appointments, helping with basic household tasks, providing service referrals to military veterans and family members, giving respite adult day care to family members, helping at community centers to offer senior nutrition meals, programming with KSQM radio in Sequim and assisting customers to reference materials at the law library in Pot Angeles.

With about 90 people waiting until the COVID-19 pandemic passes, more than 300 volunteers have remained active, assisting in a variety of roles.

Jane Covella, RSVP Program Manager with OlyCAP, estimates the volunteer work force in RSVP/NOVC programs saved the peninsula’s counties, state and federal government more than $2.1 million.

For more about the RSVP and NOVC programs, or to volunteer, contact Covella at 360-477-2574 or jcovella@olycap.org, or volunteer coordinator Becky Acevedo at 360-460-2458 or bacevedo@olycap.org.
