Three Helen Haller Elementary fifth graders were named local winners of the “What is your American Dream” essay contest hosted by the Sequim Elk’s Lodge 2642.

Students included, from left, Samantha Mooney, 10, Reed Nash, 10, and Leonides Rivas, 11.

They’ll be honored at a date to be determined with the lodge and moved forward in the West District competition.

Students read their essays to second grade classrooms as practice for speaking to an audience, teachers said.
