Milestone: OMC nurse Dehoyos receives DAISY award

Registered nurse Rosie Dehoyos, a registered nurse with Olympic Medical Center (OMC), was recently honored with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

The award, created by the DAISY Foundation, recognizes the extraordinary, compassionate nursing care provided to patients and families every day.

Dehoyos was recognized for her quick-thinking and compassionate care toward a patient experiencing an allergic reaction in the medical/surgical unit, OMC representatives said.

“What truly set Rosie apart during this frightening ordeal was the way she seamlessly transformed our relationship into a cohesive team,” wrote the patient who nominated Dehoyos for the award.

Chief Nursing Officer Vickie Swanson, and Denise Harman, director of medical/surgical/pediatrics, recently presented Dehoyos with the Daisy Award, reading the full nomination story during the presentation:

“Rosie’s exceptional nursing care, unwavering support, and remarkable presence during a critical moment have left an indelible mark on my life. Her extraordinary dedication to patient safety and compassionate nature truly embody the essence of this esteemed award.

“Rosie consistently demonstrated all the qualities one would expect from an outstanding nurse — attentiveness, empathy, knowledge, and directness. However, it was one particular incident that highlighted Rosie’s remarkable ability to go above and beyond the call of duty.

“While I was receiving an antibiotic, unbeknownst to me, I began experiencing an allergic reaction. As my hands and chest started to itch, I turned to Rosie for guidance. Without hesitation, she immediately assessed my condition, examining my glands and recognizing the severity of the situation. Rosie swiftly took action, discontinuing the antibiotics and promptly alerting the charge nurse.

“What truly set Rosie apart during this frightening ordeal was the way she seamlessly transformed our relationship into a cohesive team. Despite the inherent fear and uncertainty I was experiencing, Rosie’s calm and confident demeanor reassured me that I was not alone. She treated me as an equal, engaging in open dialogue about my symptoms, and involving me in the decision-making process. I felt protected and secure under her care, an overwhelming sense of safety in the face of the unknown.

“Rosie’s professional expertise and quick thinking were further exemplified when she swiftly summoned the Rapid Response Team, who arrived in my room within moments. Throughout the entire ordeal, Rosie remained a constant pillar of strength, standing resolutely by my side. Her presence alone provided an immeasurable sense of comfort and trust. In the midst of chaos, Rosie’s unwavering dedication and compassionate demeanor shone brightly, leaving an everlasting impression.

“It is without a doubt that Rosie’s exceptional nursing skills, coupled with her ability to foster a deep sense of connection with her patients, will undoubtedly continue to positively impact countless lives. Her genuine commitment to patient-centered care and unwavering professionalism is deserving of recognition and praise.

Rosie’s compassionate nature, unwavering dedication, and ability to instill a sense of trust and security in her patients, exemplify the spirit of the DAISY Award.”

Olympic Medical nurses may be nominated by patients, families and colleagues. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him as an “Extraordinary Nurse.”

The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.”

Honorees also receive a DAISY Award pin and a meaningful, hand-carved sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch.”

A cross-functional committee of healthcare workers review the nominations and select the final nominee.
