Milestone: Sequim’s Civil Air Patrol hosts change of command ceremony

Dungeness Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol held a cadet change of command ceremony Aug. 7, handing command of the unit’s cadet contingent over to cadet 2nd Lt. Jordan Hurdlow.

Maj. Mark Swanson, the unit commander, presided in the ceremony at Sequim Middle School.

Hurdlow, a junior at Sequim High, took over command of the cadets from cadet Maj. Madeline Patterson, a senior at SHS.

Patterson will take on a new role as the cadet executive officer, advising both the cadet commander and unit commander.

Cadet commanders in the Civil Air Patrol teach and coordinate the work of more junior cadet officers, non-commissioned officers and airmen.

Cadets are periodically circulated through different roles in Civil Air Patrol units as they ascend the Air Force-style ladder through the organization’s leadership and aerospace curriculum, giving each a chance to experience leading other cadets and interacting with adult officers.

They operate under the supervision of adult officers at the unit level.

Dungeness Composite Squadron is one of over 25 Civil Air Patrol units in Washington but the only one on the Olympic Peninsula. Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.

The unit meets at 6 p.m. Tuesdays in the Sequim Middle School cafeteria.
