Sunland Women’s Golf Association (SWGA) held their ‘Drive for the Cure’ fundraising tournament on Sept. 21, and raised $19,660. Money raised is donated to the Olympic Medical Center (OMC) Foundation to provide breast screening and diagnostic services for men and women without insurance or the means to afford tests.
Since 2011, when SWGA decided to donate locally rather than to the National Susan G. Komen Foundation, the association has donated more than $147,500 to the OMC Foundation, club members said.
Each of the two teams — Cheryl Coulter, Jay Tomlin, Judy Flanders and Phil Turner, and Kim Tomajko, Judy Reno, Bev Handshumaker, Kim Mishko — tied for first place. There were paid winners through fifth place and a nine hole division.
In addition to the golf tournament, fundraising events included: raffling 25 unique baskets; two plane rides in a private plane with an included lunch in Port Townsend; a cash drawing for $500; paying Sequim High School student Adrian Argon to hit a drive for one’s group on hole No. 1, and 48 $100 posters which honored both cancer victims and survivors as well as expressing hope for the future.
In addition to the many volunteers that helped to make this tournament successful, the Sunland Women thanked an anonymous donor that has so generously matched funds raised during this event over the past 13 years. Special support has also been given by: Bill Benedict for donating the plane rides and Bill and Kathy Benedict for sponsoring the field prizes; Rainshadow Laundry and Car Wash for the $500 cash raffle; Sound Bank for a $500 donation, and Camaraderie Winery for their donation of bottles of wine for prizes.
