The spring concert, called “she sings,” features songs of honesty, hope and courage in the face of adversity and hardship, according to a press release.

The concert explores diversity in musical styles, showcasing two works of Rosephanye Powell: “As the Deer Pants for Water,” based on a Psalm text, and “Still I Rise” showing the strength of women in a gospel setting. It is followed by a lively A capella setting of “Nothin’ Gonna Stumble My Feet.”

The full strength of the chorale is displayed from the opening bars of the famous “Alleluia” by Randall Thomson to the audience favorite by Caldwell and Ivory, “Ain’t No Grave.” All of the works are by American composers.

The chorale introduces a new composer to the audience with two pieces, one of which was selected as the name of this program, “she sings.” The composer Amy F. Bernon, who grew up in the snow country of upstate New York, would pass the time by playing piano and writing songs. Both selections are reflective of a more pop style of writing, with a message of dreams and hopes.

The “hard-edged and “blues-inflected” (composer’s description) “Life is Not a Garden” expresses young people’s frustration with the world today, ending with renewed hope. The lyrics were created with the help of high school students, expressing their view of sayings such as “life’s a bowl of cherries.”

Double bass player Michael Helwick is a guest artist on three of the selections. The traditional sing-along will be a nod to Broadway.

The concert comes to a close with the bluesy and angry “And Ain’t I a Woman!” using the famed speech of Sojourner Truth, and the traditional spiritual “Ain’t No Grave Can Hold My Body Down.”
