Looking for ways to liven up your reading? Consider a book discussion group. Discover the fun of talking and thinking more deeply about books.
Discussion groups also provide a great opportunity to meet up with friends and make new friends!
The North Olympic Library System offers several ways to transform your reading into a social event.
Some options are described below:
Book discussion groups for adults
The Sequim Library hosts the Second Saturday Book Discussion Group from 3-4 p.m. the second Saturday of each month, in person at the library’s temporary location, 609 W. Washington St.
The group will discuss “If Beale Street Could Talk” by James Baldwin on Nov. 9, and “Written in Bone” by Sue Black on Dec. 14.
If virtual programs work better for you, consider the Second Wednesday Book Discussion Group, which meets on Zoom from 4-5 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month. Join online to discuss “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury on Nov. 13, and “The Sun is a Compass” by Caroline Van Hemert on Dec. 11.
These groups provide a moderated discussion of a wide range of titles, fiction and nonfiction, throughout the year.
Everyone is welcome and there is no registration required.
Paperback copies to borrow are available at the front desk after the prior month’s discussion.
Visit nols.org/book-groups to learn more.
Kids Book Club
Students in grades 1-3 and their caregivers can join the fun, as well. Kids Book Club will meet at the Sequim Library temporary location from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5. Kids read the book on their own then join librarians for a lively discussion and a fun activity related to the book.
The December book, “Marya Khan and the Incredible Henna Party” by Saadia Faruqi, will be available to pick up beginning Thursday, Nov. 7. A limited number of books are available for participants to keep! Additional copies and formats may be available to borrow. Find details at nols.org/kbc.
Host your own book club
Check out a book kit from the library and host your own book group. Each kit contains several copies of the same book. Visit nols.org/kits to browse titles available for adults and for kids.
Additionally, the Library offers Family Conversation Kits, suggested for ages 8-12 and their families, that provide books and discussion questions to spark conversations about topics like building community, identity and self-love, and justice and activism.
Also available are Civics Kits, which include books about state, tribal and local governments, along with a discussion guide for grades 3-5 and for grades 7-12.
