Off the Shelf: Kick off fall with Library Card Month, free events

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and marks the start of fall events at the North Olympic Library System. It’s the perfect time to sign up for a free library card or encourage a friend to do so and explore everything the library has to offer. With a library card, you gain access to a diverse collection of books, movies, digital resources, community passes and more!

Everyone, with or without a library card, is invited to attend free learning, entertainment and community-building events. Visit nols.org/events to browse the full array of programs offered this fall, designed to engage and inspire lifelong learners.

Here is a sampling of events offered at the Sequim Library temporary location at 609 W. Washington St.:

Children and families

• Family Storytime: Bring your little ones to Storytime every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. before open hours. The stories and activities help foster language skills and a love of reading.

• Build-It! with LEGO Program: On the first Saturday of each month at 2:30 p.m., kids can build creatively with LEGOs while meeting new friends.

• Family Concert with Brian Vogan: Enjoy a boot-stomping musical experience with fun, inclusive and interactive tunes at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.

• Kids Book Club for students in grades 1-3: This monthly book club starts with the first book in the graphic novel series “Dragon Kingdom of Wrenly.” A limited number of free copies to keep are available beginning Thursday, Sept. 5. Read in advance then meet at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, for a discussion and activity.

Tweens and Teens

• Teen Advisory Board: Teens looking for leadership and volunteer opportunities can join to help plan library events and make a difference in our community. Meet on the first Tuesday of each month during the school year at 3:30 p.m.

• Teen Night: AT 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, this after-hours event series kicks off with a DIY craft project making squishies. Held on the second Friday of each month, Teen Night is for seventh-12th-graders only.

• STEAM Saturdays for Tweens: On the third Saturday of each month beginning Oct. 19 at 2:30 p.m., explore hands-on activities designed for students in grades 4-7. Participants will enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills while connecting with peers.

Adults

• Yarn Circle: Every Saturday at 9 a.m., join fellow yarn enthusiasts to sip warm beverages and stitch. People of all experience levels are invited to share tips, work on projects and enjoy the camaraderie.

• Fourth Friday Movie Nights: Relax and enjoy a movie on the fourth Friday of each month at 6:30 p.m. On Sept. 27, the film “The Boys in the Boat” will be screened.

• Big Apples, Big Business with Humanities Washington (Virtual): Explore how Washington became the top apple-producing state in this online presentation. Register in advance for the link to join on Zoom at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
