It’s summertime, and the staff of the North Olympic Library System have been busy since December, planning a whiz bang Summer Reading Program.
Starting June 18 and ending Aug. 18, the 2018 program includes a reading challenge with incentives to earn a free book and T-shirt, chances to win awesome grand prizes and fun events for all ages, happening both within and beyond library walls.
“Miss Patti,” Sequim Branch Library’s Youth Services Librarian, says that summer reading programs are particularly important for kids; they help alleviate the “summer slide” by providing access to books, enrichment activities and encouraging young people to keep reading during school vacation. Here’s some of what’s in store for youth this summer!
Activities abound
Each baby, child, and teen who signs up receives a free book right off the bat, and as they track their summer reading, earns chances to win prizes. The Summer Reading Program features top of the line performers and events made possible with the generous support of the Friends of Sequim Library. Thank you, Friends! Just a few performers to watch for include musicians Red Yarn and Harmonica Pocket and magician Jeff Evans — always a blast!
In cases of inclement weather or larger crowds, some events, including the Hands on Children’s Museum and BLOCK Fest, will be held at the Sequim Middle School Gym thanks to a long-standing partnership with the Sequim School District.
This year, NOLS is again taking storytimes on the road to the Farmer’s Market, the fire station and Railroad Bridge Park. Talk, sing, read, write, and play all around town this summer!
The Summer Reading Program will wrap up with a celebratory pool party, held this year at the YMCA of Sequim!
There are also programs and events especially for teens, such as the Harry Potter Escape Room challenge. Rock-Star Teen Volunteers who sign up to help at Summer Reading Program events have fun, help build community – and develop resume skills. Teens entering grades 7-12 who are interested in volunteering must apply by June 18.
There is something for everyone in the summer reading program; adult readers can track reading, win prizes, and attend events too! Also, don’t miss the Summertime Music outdoor concert series starting Aug. 17 at the Sequim Library.
