Local book lovers and wine connoisseurs are coming together for a good cause again.
Wind Rose Cellars of Sequim is partnering with the Jefferson County Library, Port Townsend Library Foundation and North Olympic Library Foundation to produce Library RE(a)D, a classic red table wine in the Italian tradition.
The wine is available at Wind Rose Cellars, 155-B W. Cedar St. in Sequim, The Red Rooster Grocery in Sequim, Country Aire Market and Renaissance in Port Angeles, the Agnew Store, and Getables and the Wine Seller in Port Townsend. Sales benefit all three libraries’ services.
“We at Wind Rose think there’s no better way to support our community than to help out our libraries,” said David Volmut, winemaker.
“Library RE(a)D is a Washington wine made of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera grapes. The blend is a dark ruby red with aromas of blackberry jam, vanilla and leather. The wine opens with flavors of black currant, blackberry and spice. The chocolate finish offers hints of cocoa and dark plum. Pair it with hearty cuisine such as pork, lamb, portobello mushrooms or beef ribs … and a good book, of course!”
Theresa Percy, director of the Port Townsend Library, came up with the idea for the wine partnership a year ago.
She was intrigued with the idea of challenging the stereotype of public libraries and capitalizing on the fact that many library customers enjoy and appreciate excellent local wines.
Sorensen Cellars in Chimacum produced the “first edition” for the Jefferson County Library and the Port Townsend Library Foundation in 2012.
It was a hugely popular cabernet and the inventory ran out in just a few months.
Organizers said oenophiles and bibliophiles have been clamoring for a second edition ever since.
Since Wind Rose Cellars is located within the service area of the North Olympic Library System, this year the North Olympic Library Foundation (NOLF) was invited to be a new partner.
“We are grateful to Wind Rose Cellars for their support and we hope locals who are planning to buy wine for holiday entertaining or gifts consider Library RE(a)D,” said NOLF board president Gary Colley.
Library RE(a)D sells for $28/bottle, with $6 per bottle going to support the libraries. The libraries are splitting the cost of labels and promotional materials.

Wind Rose Cellars is open on 1-7 p.m. Saturdays and 1-4 p.m. Sundays.
