Auditions for Olympic Theatre Arts’ production of “Scapino!” are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, April 30, and at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, May 1, at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center, 414 N. Sequim Ave.

Director Pat Owens is looking for 14 energetic actors to bring life to “Scapino!” — a hectic, colorful update of a classic farce by Moliére.

“Imagine updating the Commedia stylings to that of the Marx Brothers, with Groucho, Chico and Harpo playing the leads,” Owens said.

Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622–1673), known by his stage name Moliére, was a French playwright and actor considered to be one of the top masters of comedy in Western literature.

“Les Fourberies de Scapin,” was first staged on May 24, 1671, in the theater of the Palais-Royal in Paris. The adaptation “Scapino!” — written by Frank Dunlop and Jim Dale — is the tale of Scapin, the deceitful valet who contrives to bring his master’s children and their respective loves together through all kinds of trickery despite his master’s conflicting plans.

Those auditioning for “Scapino!” will be asked to read from the script, copies of which are available for review at the OTA business office. The play runs July 8-24.
