PC’s jazz band, vocalists set spring concert at Field Hall

The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble and Vocal Masters Singers will present a joint concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, at the Field Arts & Events Hall, 201 W. Front St., Port Angeles.

Concert-goers will enjoy the sounds of classic and modern jazz by the band under the direction of Marge Rosen and singers from the Vocal Masters class under direction of Elaine Gardner-Morales.

The concert includes a wide variety of music from George Gershwin, Herbie Hancock, Seattle composer Nelda Swiggett, The Meters, Norah Jones and Queen, with a special arrangement of “Is That All There Is” performed by Tess Teel and arranged by accompanist of the Vocal Masters Singers, Al Harris of Sequim.

Admission is free, for all ages, with a suggested donation of $10 that supports PC’s music programs. The Sunset Lounge will be open during the concert and doors open at 6 p.m.

The performers represent some of the best jazz instrumentalists and singers that the North Olympic Peninsula has to offer, organizers note. Sequim instrumentalists include John Wetherill on piano, Kendall Melton on bass, Jayne Morrison on alto sax, Keith Boll and Kevin MacCartney on tenor sax, Jeff Fox on baritone sax, Nancy McPherson and Dan James on trumpet, and Jeff Dingle, Cliff Brown and Tom Hartig on trombone.

Instrumentalists from Port Angeles are Jim Bradbury, Larry Madsen, and Jan Stark on trumpet, Liberty Mavy on violin, and conductor Marge Rosen on drums. Port Townsend area instrumentalists are John Adams on alto sax and Dan Powell on trombone.

Vocalists include Amelia Breithaupt (Discovery Bay), Joycelin Grier (Port Angeles), Janet Lucas (Port Angeles), Rachel Valdez (Nashville) and Robin Eaves (Joyce). The special guest singer will be Teel, a Port Townsend resident who will also serve as the concert emcee.

Rosen and Gardner-Morales said they were thrilled to present the idea of the collaborative concert to the College Foundation last fall.

“I’m excited to combine the talents of the college’s jazz ensemble and vocal classes,” Rosen said. “This will be a unique educational experience for Peninsula College’s jazz students.”

“This offers my vocal students an exciting chance to sing with a big band as well as performing in the very beautiful and world class performance venue, the Field Arts & Events Hall,” Gardner-Morales added.
