Dr. David P. Jones and the Peinsula College Jazz Ensemble invite the community to their Winter Quarter Jazz Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the Maier Performance Hall at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.
Robbin Eaves, in a tribute to the late, great Michel Legrand, will sing the Oscar-nominated song, “You Must Believe in Spring” as well as one of Sting’s lesser known songs from 1987, “Fragile.”
Olga Palenga will sing the Oscar-winning “The Shadow of Your Smile” by Johnny Mercer. She will also perform Bob Dorough’s “Devil May Care.”
Stepping out of the trumpet section for a bit, Port Townsend’s Scott Sizer takes a couple of turns at the vocalists’ mic with the popular Schwartz and Dietz piece, “You and the Night and the Music,” and Count Basie’s lesser known ballad, “Blue and Sentimental.”
The 17-piece PC Jazz Ensemble adds instrumentals by Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, George Gershwin, Nat Adderley, Oliver Nelson, Pat Metheny, John Scofield and Stevie Wonder. It’s been a few years since PC has fielded the full standard big-band complement. Nearly one third of this year’s horn section is either new to the band or returning after a long absence.
Performers represent some of the very best jazz that the North Olympic Peninsula has to offer, event organizers say. From Sequim are Craig Buhler (tenor sax/flute), Jeff Dingle (trombone), Bonnie Booth (trombone), Elaine Gardner-Morales (bass), and Nicia Pfeffer (drums). Representing Port Angeles are Olga Palenga (piano), Bob Bailey (alto sax), Richard “Doc” Thorson (tenor sax), Ken Lorentzen (trumpet), Mike Ehre (trumpet), WesLee Laughman (trumpet), and David Jones (keyboards/director). From Port Townsend are John Adams (alto sax/bass clarinet), Lorenzo Jones (bari sax) and Scott Sizer (trumpet), and from Port Ludlow is, Ron Daylo (trombone). Drummer Tor Brandes makes the trek all the way from the Brinnon area.
The concert is free and open to the public.
