Peninsula Singers are Bach for ‘More’

Peninsula Singers' show to feature patriotic, classical tunes April 11-12

The Peninsula Singers returns for its spring concert this Saturday and Sunday with “Bach & More!”

The choir of 43 local performers open the performance on April 11-12 in Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., singing “Cantata No. 140, Wachet auf!” by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Conductor Dewey Ehling says out of Bach’s 200-plus cantatas this is his favorite.

“It is based on a familiar hymn tune and includes three parts – two duets and a chorale that Bach highlighted and are known the world over as some of his career’s choice finest melodies,” Ehling said.

The duets will be sung by two veteran singers Cynthia Webster, soprano, and Ray Chilayath, bass, and the singers will be accompanied at times by oboist Anne Krabill, principal oboist with the Port Angeles Symphony, and local violinist Mary Moon.

The second half of the program consists of 10 early American hymns and spirituals with Kyra Humphrey singing the spiritual, “Sometimes I Feel” and Joel Yelland will sing “My God Is a Rock.” Trent Pomeroy will sing as the tenor soloist in “Amazing Grace” with all of the music arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw.

The program closes with two patriotic pieces — the first written by local resident Brian Pettyjohn, set to music by Jean Sibelius and sung by the Peninsula Singers and the concert will close with “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

The Saturday show begins at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday show at 2 p.m. Tickets for the show are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors/students, and are available at the Antique Emporium in Port Angeles, Hart’s Fine Books in Sequim and members of the choir.
