The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center will be highlighting their current exhibition “Beauty and Resilience” at the Second Saturday Art Walk, starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
The event begins with a poetry reading by the Native Poets Group, nationally recognized local and native poets will share works inspired by the Elwha River and led by Brenda Francis-Thomas (Elwha Klallam). The group, under different names, has existed since before the Elwha Dams were removed. To celebrate the removal, the group produced the anthology, “Where Thunderbird Rests His Head and Waits for the Songs of Return.” They later published the anthology “Echo” under the leadership of Tor Parker (Makah).
These anthologies will be available for sale at the gallery, with all proceeds going to the Native Poets Group to enable a new anthology of work.
Many of the poems to be read emerged from the Indian Voices Workshop led by Suz Bennett and facilitated by Alice Derry and Kate Reavey.
Following the poetry reading, featured artist Darrell Charles, a member of the Lower Elwha Tribe and “Beauty and Resilience” artist, will share his story and relationship with traditional carving. He will also give a live demonstration using his hand forged tools to showcase the skills, persistence and love that go into each carving.
All of the events are free to attend and open to all. Drinks will be available for purchase.
