Quilters and heroes: Readers Theatre Plus production

They’re a quiet group of North Olympic Peninsula women. They gather once a month in a classroom at Sleepy Valley Quilt Store. They have one purpose in mind, to do honor to the nation’s unsung heroes. These busy creative women are American Hero Quilters. Their sole passion is to sew red, white and blue pieces of fabric into simple or intricate patterns that make up the quilts given to wounded soldiers. This small group of women is a part of a bigger picture started by Sue Nebecker of Vashon Island.

Readers Theatre Plus is proud to announce a tribute to America’s returning men and women who have served in the military in a special show, “American Hero Quilts, The Story.” Readers Theatre Plus co-founder Carol Swarbrick Dries has written the script and is directing this production, a conversation among peninsula quilters and the founder of American Hero Quilts, Sue Nebecker. In addition, local veterans, some of whom served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan, will be reading letters received by the organization from other veterans, their families and friends and medical personnel in the field.

This presentation can be seen April 8-10 at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, Sequim, and April 15-17 at The Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Shows on Fridays and Saturdays are at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Pacific Mist Books and Odyssey Bookshop for $12 each or two for $20. All proceeds benefit American Hero Quilts, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group.
