Sequim native Katelynn Carter goes into her senior year at Sequim High School as queen of the county.
Her parents are Lisa and Scott Carter and her siblings are Tyler, Dallas and Bailey.
Earlier this year, she was selected Clallam County Fair queen in a ceremony based on multiple points including impromptu questions, a prepared speech, responsibility and more. She’s joined on the court with Princess Samantha Winger of Forks and Princess Lacey Bishop of Quilcene.
The fair, with the theme “Cowboy Boots & Country Roots,” runs Aug. 18-21 at the fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St. in Port Angeles.
The royalty host a formal meet-and-greet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, where visitors can speak with and take pictures with the royalty. Carter and fellow royalty will be on hand throughout the fair making appearances at its many events and helping judge animal costume contests. Carter will have her hands full between FFA and royalty duties as she balances appearances, pig shows and pig washes.
Despite the fair beginning next week, Carter took a few minutes to answer some Random Questions.
Question 1: How did you get into your line of work?
Carter: I work at 7 Cedars Casino with my mom, Lisa Carter. I’ve been there about a week.
Bonus Question 1: Why did you pursue being queen?
Carter: Because I’ve seen all the other royalty before at the fair and I like the idea of wearing cowboy boots and sparkly shirts but still getting bling-y crowns, walking around and being in gowns. I also like the fair a lot.
Bonus 2: What’s your first or best memory of the fair?
Carter: My first time being involved was my freshman year showing animals for FFA. I show pigs. You never realize how much work it is until two days before and the day after the fair. I always went (to the fair before). I love lemonade and elephant ears. I’m still looking for a perfect corn dog.
Question 6: What is your favorite animal?
Carter: I love giraffes. I like their colors and I think it’d be cool to be in Africa.
Question 7: What’s your favorite color?
Carter: Red. People tell me that’s my color.
Question 17: What is the first song that comes to mind when I finish this sentence?
Carter: “Cheap Thrills” by Sia because that’s what I just listened to in my car.
Question 41: Who is one person you’d like to arm wrestle?
Carter: Jake Owen because then I’d get to meet him and touch him. I went to one of his concerts and it just wasn’t enough. We saw him when we were in Kentucky for nationals (with FFA).
Question 39: Mustaches, cool or not?
Carter: Depends on the mustache. I feel like normal mustaches are kind of weird and itchy. But super fluffy or really curly ones would be pretty cool.
Bonus 3: What do you have planned as a senior and after graduation?
Carter: I’m looking into ultrasound and X-ray technician schools but I don’t want to think about that right now. I don’t want to grow up … I’m most excited (this school year) for senior ball and senior pictures.
