Do you have rocks you would like identified or are you looking for that special rock, crystal or fossil specimen; or do you just want to hang out with other rock hounds?
The Rock, Gem & Jewelry Show sponsored by the City of Port Angeles Parks & Recreation Department, from March 18-19 at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., is the place you want to be.
Rocks from around the world, faceted gem stones, geodes, jewelry, beads and much more all in one place with knowledgeable vendors to assist you.
In addition to the vendors, the show will feature noted local geologist/biologist Elaine Bickle who will discuss “Just Fossils” from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday. Bickle is from Little Rock, Ark., until she retired and moved to Port Angeles in 2007. She lectured geology and biology on university and college levels for over 30 years in Arkansas. Bickle gives talks, classes and guided geology field trips at the Port Angeles Senior Center and lectures at the Port Angeles Library.
From 1-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dr. Russell Boggs will be available to identify your “mystery” rocks. Boggs, who graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in mineralogy and completed his master’s and doctorate programs at the University of California–Santa Barbara, also will offer personal field collecting techniques.
The show has something for everyone and it’s all free. “Rock Alley” full of children’s games will be open and there will be free rocks for them while the supply lasts. Don’t miss the raffle featuring beautiful rock slabs, crystals, fossils and jewelry.
The Boys & Girls Club of the Olympic Peninsula will be providing food with all food sales proceeds benefiting the Port Angeles Unit.
Show hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
