Troop leaders with Scout Troops 1498 and 7498 say scouting is more important than ever in the modern world as it provides a unique opportunity for teens to unplug from technology and get into nature.
The troops also participate in service projects that improve the community, such as painting the Shipley Center parking lot, building picnic tables and shelving for the Sequim YMCA, replacing part of a bridge on the Discovery Trail, picking up roadside trash, and more. Scouts learn to work together and become leaders while making a tangible difference, leaders said.
With 36 scouts ages 11-18, some families cannot afford the cost of participating, so some fundraisers have been established.
Goodness Tea owner Shaelee Evans is giving 100% of the profits from an online fundraiser to the Scouts through the end of 2024 by going to GoodnessTea.com and making an order using the code SEQUIMSCOUTS. For more information, call Goodness Tea at 360-670-1041.
A donation link is also set up at https://go.rallyup.com/sequimscouts. Funds help with camps, supplies, equipment and more.
To make a tax-deductible donation to the troops, contact Committee Chair Brenda Spears at 360-531-0367.
Scouts will also pick up your Christmas tree at your home for a suggested donation of $25 or you can drop your tree off at the former JCPenny parking lot on Jan. 11, 2025 for a suggested donation of $20. Contact Scoutmaster Paul Rynearson at 360-461-4015.
Trees must be free of bulbs, tinsel, and flocking as they are recycled at the Olympic Peninsula Alpaca Rescue.
If you have items to donate to the troops’ annual online auction by Feb. 2025, contact Lara Plecher at 360-809-0021.
