January is School Board Appreciation month. Board Directors Robin Henrikson (president), Beverly Horan (vice president), Mike Howe, Heather Short and Jim Stoffer (legislative representative) were honored during the Jan. 17 school board meeting with tokens of appreciation from the high school cooking class, floral arrangement class and FBLA students. Handmade posters by student groups adorned the walls of the board room.

In addition, the district purchased a hardcover book for each school library, selected by the school’s librarian, in appreciation for the school board directors.

Family Reading Night is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road. Teacher/librarians Sheri Kruckeberg (Helen Haller Elementary), Dena Riccobene (Greywolf Elementary), Elizabeth Lawson (Sequim Middle School) and Linsay Rapelje (Sequim High School) have once again teamed up to organize an evening of fun for the entire family. Lots of activities, free books and no admission fee!

There is no school on Monday, Jan. 30, for students. The district office will be open.

A public forum, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Clallam County, is from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at the Sequim Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St., to present information on the two levy resolutions on the Feb. 14 special election. After a short presentation by superintendent Gary Neal, questions will be taken. For more information on the levy resolutions, call the district office at 582-3260.

If you own a business and are interested in being a calendar sponsor for the 2017-18 school year district calendar, contact M. Patsene Dashiell at mdashiell@sequim.k12.wa.us or 582-3264.

GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Carla Morton recently had students working in small groups to each design and build an energy transfer system that would ring a bell. Students collaborated to formulate tasks, execute plans and solve problems.

Winning a National Distinguished School Award for hard work and improvement in mathematics calls for a celebration! What kind of a celebration, you may ask? With a dance party, of course! Bring your best dance moves and your entire family (all students must be accompanied by an adult) on Thursday, Feb. 2, to the school gym for a hamburger dinner and a dance! Dress in Greywolf School’s spirit colors (blue and grey) and there will be prizes awarded for the most spirited individual, the most spirited family and for special dance categories!

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Helen Haller teachers celebrated diversification and equal rights in preparation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with their students in a variety of ways during the week of Jan. 9-13.

Several before and after- school clubs have started in the past few weeks including a first-grade Debate Club, a Spelling Bee Club, Chess Club, a Coding Club and a Literacy Club. For more information, call the school office at 582-3200.

Third-grade students are working on essays for the Irrigation Festival and all students are eligible to enter a design for the Irrigation Festival Button contest.

Lead secretary Debbie Buchillo, for many years a familiar face in the front office, is retiring! Debbie has been at Helen Haller Elementary for 31 years, 28 of them as our secretary. Principal Becky Stanton said, “It doesn’t seem enough to say that we will miss her. Her years of service and dedication to the friends and families at Haller are a pleasure to witness and to hear about.”

Thank you, Mrs. Buchillo, for your countless hours of friendly service and your tireless dedication to the well-being of the many people you have touched over the years!

Senior parents, if you are planning on placing a senior parent ad in the yearbook, the deadline is Friday, Jan. 27, by 3 p.m. The ad usually includes a short note to the graduate and a photo — quite often a baby photo. The cost is $50 for the quarter-page ad. Questions? Contact Jim Heintz, photography teacher and yearbook advisor, at jheintz@sequim.k12.wa.us.

Seniors, the HIV/AIDS DEN class period is Monday, Feb. 6. Please remember that attendance at this class is a graduation requirement!
