DISTRICT

Get up-to-date district information, including school board agendas and minutes, links for parents and students, and more at www.sequimschools.org.

District officials are gearing up for kindergarten registration. Traditionally this happens in early April but with the statewide “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” mandate officials are looking into alternative ways to register and prepare parents/guardians and their students. Plan and write a story about a mission into our solar system (to the moon, Mars, International Space Station, or other planets). Use all knowledge you have learned about our solar system and have fun! You can write your story on paper, type it, make a PowerPoint, or make a paper book with illustrations. To get you in the mood, here’s one of our songs from class: www.youtube.com/watch?v=noiwY7kQ5NQ.

Good luck with your mission!

Mrs. Ellefson

Here is Eden Schubert’s emailed reply and story:

Dear Mrs. Ellefson,

This is Eden. Here is my Mission story. I had fun coming up with it. I used Dictate to tell the story into Word, but I have been practicing typing.com every day. My mom did help me edit it. I miss you! Bye!

Happy HHE Spirit Day!

I hope you are enjoying the sunshine. I think our dogs are getting tired from all of our walks. They do love exploring though.

I found a great story on Storytime from space (storytimefromspace.com/mousetronaut-2). It’s about a mouse who visits the International Space Station. Imagine being a mouse and getting to go into space! While he’s there, he has a problem to solve. Watch and listen to the story to see how he goes about solving the problem.

“Sarah and Goldie’s Mission to Mars” by Eden Lee Schubert

One day in the International Space Station Laboratory, a scientist named Sarah and her dog named Goldie were getting ready to go to Mars. Soon they were ready to blast off.

“5 … 4 … 3 … 2 … 1 … Blast Off!”

Sarah and Goldie were up in space with their crew. Soon they were out of Earth’s atmosphere and it was very dark in space. They could see stars shining and it was beautiful. Soon they were on Mars. They communicated to the scientists on earth. Everybody was cheering and happy that they were able to land on Mars. Sarah was the happiest of them all because she was the person that was going to do the walk on Mars to collect special rocks that the scientists could examine and learn more about Mars.

Sarah was eager to go and do the walk. She stepped out of the rocket ship and she was amazed. She thought Mars was beautiful. It was reddish orange with lots of dust. She picked up some rocks and examined each one.

She said into her walkie talkie “I found some rocks. They are reddish orange and in all shapes and sizes.” The scientists communicated back that they would be happy to see them as soon as she returned.

After a while of wandering and gathering rocks, Sarah realized she could no longer see the rocket ship. She had lost track of time and realized she had been gone for hours and was not able to communicate with the crew any longer. She was lost.

Back at the rocket ship, everybody was getting very worried. They couldn’t see Sarah outside the ship and they couldn’t hear her on the radio.

“I hope she is close!” Goldie thought. Goldie had been watching Sarah through the rocket window and realized that she couldn’t see Sarah’s figure walking on the dusty ground. She could tell everyone was worried. The crew wanted to go find Sarah, but they also thought it was very risky to send another person out.

Goldie loved Sarah, and Sarah loved Goldie. Goldie had her dog space suit ready and was able to get it on without the crew noticing. She snuck out of the space ship and went to find Sarah.

Goldie looked around the dusty planet, but Sarah was not in sight. All Goldie saw was dust clouds and dust and rocks laying around.

Goldie wondered, “I wonder if she’s OK!” She walked around more but Sarah was still in no sight. Just then behind the rocket on the ground Goldie saw footprints! They looked like they were from an astronaut. Goldie knew it was Sarah’s footprints and she just had to follow the footprints.

Goldie followed the footprints for a long time, but much time had passed, and she could not find Sarah. The tracks ended in a place with lots of hills. Maybe dusty wind blew the tracks away. Goldie wished she could use her strong sense of smell to track Sarah, but she knew that she couldn’t smell Sarah through the dog space suit. Goldie decided to turn around and head back toward the rocket, hoping to find Sarah along the way.

Suddenly, through the dust on a hill in the distance Goldie saw a large figure walking toward her. She was a little worried and thought it could be an alien but that was very unlikely.

“It’s Sarah!” Goldie ran up to Sarah and Sarah hugged her.

“I’m so glad you found me!” said Sarah. “I was lost, and my walkie talkie stopped working for some reason!”

The only problem was that they were lost themselves. But then Sarah had a good idea.

“Why don’t we follow our footprints?” she said cheerfully.

They followed their footprints and soon came back to the spaceship. Everybody was cheering and happy to see them.

Sarah was the most happy of them all. “What would I do without you?” Sarah said to Goldie. Goldie gave Sarah a happy lick on the cheek. Everybody was happy for them and the scientists were happy because they got rocks from Mars.

The End.

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

Senior parents: There will be a Skyward Invite to a virtual meeting hosted by superintendent Dr. Rob Clark and principal Shawn Langston at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 16, to talk about graduation and other senior activities that have been currently furloughed. Call 360-582-3260 or see www.sequimschools.org for more information.

Sequim High School would like to “Shine the Light” on spring sport athletes who lost their season due to the “Stay at Home” order to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The stadium lights at Sequim High School will be turned on at 8:20 p.m. (20:20 military time) on Friday, April 17, for 20 minutes as a small gesture of support for all spring sport athletes who missed out on their 2020 spring season. There will be no opportunity to gather — to respect social distancing guidelines — but feel free to take a drive by the stadium and honk your horns to show your support for all the athletes.
