‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ receives five nominations at 5th Avenue theater awards

Sequim’s “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” can now add five accolades to its resumé.

Organizers of the 5th Avenue Theatre Awards announced nominations on May 23 that included Sequim’s Silas Baird as Adam Pontipee for “Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role,” The Brothers for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Group,” “Outstanding Scenic Design,” and Honorable Mention for Abby Norman for “Outstanding Choreography” and John Lorentzen for “Outstanding Music Direction.”

Robin Robinson Hall, who directed the 51st operetta for Sequim High School from May 5-20, said Baird’s nomination is the fourth for a leading man in a Sequim production.

Sequim has been nominated dozens of times in the awards show’s 15-year history and saw success with its 2007 production of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” where Blake Barnes as Gideon won “Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role” and The Brothers ensemble for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble.” Sequim’s “Wizard of Oz” also won “Outstanding Costume Design” in 2008, too.

Sequim High junior Norman receives her second back-to-back nomination for choreography. Lorentzen also has been nominated before.

For the nominations, 5th Avenue judges come to random productions at area high schools during the 2016-2017 school year for the awards show that honors high school musical theater programs. The awards show runs on June 12 at McCaw Hall in Seattle and will be live streamed on the The 5th Avenue Theatre Facebook page at www.facebook.com/5thAvenueEdu.
