Show off literary ‘taste’ with Edible Book contest

The North Olympic Library System’s (NOLS) Edible Book Day calls on participants to create dishes that are true works of art related to or inspired by books.

Submit photos of creative edible art by March 28 to enter the fun competition offering a range of prizes.

The International Edible Book Festival is an annual event uniting bibliophiles, book artists and food lovers to celebrate the ingestion of culture, library representatives note.

Participants create edible books that are exhibited, documented and then consumed.

Submissions must relate to a specific book, or to books in general, in either shape or content.

First place and runner-up prizes are awarded in the following categories: Best Pun; Best Technical Presentation; Best Book Representation; Judge’s Choice, and Kids 12 and under.

Winners receive a $20 or $10 gift card from a local retailer of their choice: Odyssey Bookshop; That Takes the Take; Buena Luz Bakery; Chinook Pharmacy, or Westend Taproom Tip & Sip.

To submit an entry, create a masterpiece and take photos. Between Monday, March 21, and Monday, March 28, submit two or three of the top photos, specify if the submittal is by someone 12 years old or younger, and offer a descriptive paragraph (optional) to EdibleBooks@nols.org.

The description may include specific book details featured in the creation, major ingredients and inspiration.

All entries will be shared to the NOLS Facebook and Instagram pages.

Winners will be announced on those pages on April 1.

Entries will be scored by a team of staff and Library partners on imaginativeness and relevancy to a book, technical presentation, difficulty of execution, perceived edibility, and originality, library representatives say.

This program is supported by local Friends of the Library Groups.
