For the 15th consecutive year, Sequim Community Church is putting on its annual Christmas celebration, which has morphed over the years into a 150-person extravaganza.
The ensemble, which includes actors, singers, orchestral musicians and a pop band, will stage three performances: at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, and at 2 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 13-14, in the Fellowship Hall at 950 N. Fifth Ave.
There will be child care at the Saturday performance only to encourage young families to attend.
Joel Rosenauer, director of worship, music and arts for the church, said religious- and sectarian-minded attendees will find something uplifting in the 90-minute production of music interspersed with dramatic vignettes reflecting the reason for the season. The theme is “Love Came for Me,” expressed in solos, pieces by children and adult choirs and instrumentals. Some of the program is fun and light-hearted and other parts are more pensive, including a song sung in Latin.
“We’ll have music for the whole family,” Rosenauer said. “It’s religious-themed but we’re hopeful we get a lot of people who don’t attend our church who want to see good performances. There are themes anybody can relate to — everything from Christmas carols to more classical music.”
Some of the songs include “Carol the Bells,” “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” “Love Came for Me,” “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” “Peace, Peace,” “On Christmas Day” and “All Glory” which features African percussion instruments.
He said drama director Lily Carignon has crafted eight skits reflecting different takes on Christmas and family relationships.
Planning for the colossal event begins in June and rehearsals start in earnest in September.
Rosenauer said the event is a source of pride for the 700-member congregation because “it’s a way to introduce people to our church that might not come on Sundays and it’s an event to get into the Christmas spirit and bless people in our church and anybody who comes. We want as many people to meet Jesus as we can.”
He added, “I’d like people to know that many, many people worked on this and without them there’s no way we could pull it off. I’m the one who gets all the compliments but I really need to spread those around.”
Also in the format will be a short Christmas message from the Rev. Scott Koenigsaecker, senior pastor.
“The thing that’s really impressed people in the past is the overall quality of the program, including the performances of the actors and actresses, the way technology is used and the quality of the music,” Rosenauer said.
“It’s the best $5 deal in town at Christmastime and people will have their expectations exceeded and leave with great big smiles on their faces!”
Tickets will be available at the door for $5 per person or $15 per family, but the event often is sold out. Purchase advance tickets from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday at the church office.
