This November, the St. Luke’s Holiday Bazaar will celebrate its 60th anniversary of providing holiday treasures to the Olympic Peninsula. Back in 1956 when the entirepopulation of Sequim numbered about 1,000, a small group of women formed the St.Luke’s Episcopal Churchwoman’s Bazaar Committee. Their goal was to sellhomemade creations and use the funds to save up for a kitchen and parish hall.
Some of the early bazaars were held at the Masonic Hall. A number of objects could be preordered, such as a Christmas stocking with an embroidered name. Other items included quiet books, Raggedy Ann &Andy’s, doll clothes, ornaments and bakedgoods. In the 1960s, handmade (with a cookie-cutter) and hand-painted plaster of Paris Santas and angels were a hit.
These traditions, plus providing a lunch to shoppers, continues to this day.
The bazaar is from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave, Sequim. All items continue to be handmade.
