Following a hiccup out of their control with their planned Senior Class Play, the Sequim High Operetta Club has drafted a fairy tale of their own.
“Sequimderella: A Sequim Cinderella Story” plays four times Feb. 13-16 at the school’s auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave. Shows are at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children 12 and younger and students with student body cards. They can be purchased online at sequimschools.org or at the door.
Sequim senior, Operetta Club member and actress Sophia Treece said the original play they commissioned in late fall was revealed to not be what they expected in quality, length and cost, and it took longer for the rights to be approved, so in a short amount of time they considered other options.
Director Anna Pederson and a group of club members came together to brainstorm and made an outline for their own show, which became “Sequimderella: A Sequim Cinderella Story.”
Club members Mark Adrian Dulfo, Emma Gilliam, Aason Judd, Reid Randall, Treece, Jovi Weller and Pederson split up the play evenly so they’d each write a scene, and Pederson would help them edit it.
Treece said staging this show has been different from all their others, but it’s been a lot of fun.
“I think we’ve done a really good job with the amount of time we’ve had and I’m really proud of how it’s turned out,” she said.
“Sequimderella” follows small town Oscar (Dulfo) who meets TV star Roxanne St. James (Weller) during her visit to Sequim to connect with “real high schoolers” for research, according to the actors. St. James comes to Sequim at the prompting of her agent/fairy godfather (Aason Judd) who happens to be from the area.
“We were like, ‘Okay, Cinderella’s a really fun story, what can we do with this?’ And we’re like, ‘What if we just made it a part of our hometown?’” Treece said.
She said it was a lot of fun to write her portion of the show, and she enjoyed Pederson’s additions to flesh it out. Treece wrote the first scene of St. James in Hollywood and Pederson suggested adding a mother character for the actress (played by Azlynn Judd).
“I thought it was a really fun element and she adds more depth to it,” Treece said.
“I think she really amped up how bad and toxic the Hollywood world is.”
Thirteen seniors are involved in the Senior Class Play, along with many students from other grades. Ticket proceeds benefit the Class of 2025’s Senior Ball and graduation festivities.
Following “Sequimderella,” the Operetta Club will stage “Oklahoma!” for the operetta in May, with auditions set for next week.
