Tidepools submissions accepted

Local author earns award

Stewart M. Harris, of Sequim, received the Military Writers Society of America Gold Medal for 2010 for his book “Shore Duty, A Year in Vietnam’s Junk Force.” His award, in the category of Military History/Navy, was presented at the society’s conference in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Harris earned a degree in engineering from Iowa State University before being commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1964. After two tours in destroyers, he was assigned as a senior advisor to a coastal group in South Vietnam. The three senior advisors before him were killed and the book relates his story as the fourth.

Art show and sale

Sequim Arts holds its 2010 Members Art Show and Sale from 10 a.m.-

5 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 4-7, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. A members and guests reception is 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3.

This annual nonjuried event is for Sequim Arts members to display and sell original or reproductions of their works. A silent auction and raffle are held. The event is free. For more information, call Maryann Proctor at 681-5320.

Opera in Victoria

Music Across the Strait, a fundraiser for the Port Angeles Symphony, includes a performance of Puccini’s “La Boheme” opera in Victoria, British Columbia.

For best seating, tickets should be ordered by Friday, Nov. 26, for the 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, performance.

Ticket prices of $130 per person include a donation to the symphony but do not include ferry transportation, hotel or meals. Special room rates in Victoria are available.

Book discussion

“The Great Gatsby,” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, will be discussed at

3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

This defining novel of the Roaring ’20s, set among the mansions of wealthy Long Islanders, features Gatsby, a young, mysterious millionaire with shady business connections and an obsessive love for Daisy Fay Buchanan. In this surprisingly short novel, Fitzgerald explores complex themes of materialism, social standing and the American Dream.

Multiple copies of the book are available at the Sequim Library and can be requested online through the library catalog at www.nols.org.

Preregistration is not required and drop-ins are welcome.
